Prophetic Characteristics in Tafsīr Aḥsan al-Kalām: An Analytical Study of Exegetical Methodology, Distinctive Features, and Contemporary Relevance

Abstract

The Qur’an presents the personality and mission of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through various dimensions, including his distinctive characteristics, virtues, responsibilities, and special privileges granted to him by Allah Almighty. The study of these Prophetic characteristics, known as Khaṣāʾiṣ al-Nabawiyyah, is significant for understanding the unique status of the Prophet ﷺ within the Qur’anic conception of prophethood. This research examines the treatment of Khaṣāʾiṣ al-Nabawiyyah in Tafsīr Aḥsan al-Kalām, with particular focus on its exegetical methodology, distinctive interpretive features, and contemporary relevance.

The study employs a qualitative and analytical methodology. Relevant Qur’anic verses concerning the distinctive characteristics, privileges, responsibilities, and attributes of the Prophet ﷺ are identified and analyzed in the light of Tafsīr Aḥsan al-Kalām. Particular attention is given to the exegetical sources, use of Prophetic traditions, explanations of Qur’anic context, linguistic interpretation, and the manner in which the exegete establishes the distinctive status of the Prophet ﷺ. The study also explores how these interpretations contribute to a balanced understanding of Prophetic authority, obedience, reverence, and ethical conduct.

The research demonstrates that Tafsīr Aḥsan al-Kalām presents the Prophetic characteristics within a comprehensive Qur’anic framework that combines theological, ethical, legal, and spiritual dimensions. Its interpretation emphasizes the unique position of the Prophet ﷺ while maintaining the essential distinction between divine attributes and Prophetic qualities. The study further argues that the exegetical discussion of Khaṣāʾiṣ al-Nabawiyyah possesses considerable contemporary relevance, particularly in strengthening understanding of Prophetic authority, promoting reverence for the Prophet ﷺ, and developing an informed and balanced approach to the study of Prophetic personality in contemporary Muslim scholarship.
